The Kotare or Kingfisher is found widely throughout New Zealand and is prehaps best recognised perched on power lines or posts while searching for prey. Kōtare were admired by Māori for their ability to patiently perch for long periods of time and led to the name of the elevated platform in a pā where a sentry would stand being referred to as the kōtare. They are fearless hunters.
This beautiful ceramic Kotare feather is inspired by the iridesent blue cape of feathers stretching from head to tail. They have cream and yellow breast feathers. It is 21cm long and 5.2cm wide. It hangs from a string through the tip of the feather.
